While Listening and Recording

The following activities are truly gratifying and will inspire you to do some real exploring, stretching the boundaries of your ear’s ability to hear and your recording gear’s limits on what it can capture. When considering what you might want to listen for or record, always keep in mind three things:

1. Your presence may affect the behavior of many wild organisms when you show up in their habitats to record. Because your arrival at any site will most certainly cause many creatures to take notice, care is important especially if you wish to get a fine recording. Patience, consideration, and awareness are keys.

2. Always remain conscious and respectful of every organism around you. Your safety and that of others may depend on this.

3. Federal and state laws are fairly strict regarding close approach and harassment of endangered or threatened species in both marine and terrestrial environments. If you are recording with a commercial or scientific outcome in mind, you may need to obtain a special permit to proceed if you decide to record within the boundaries of national parks and many state venues.

Many of you are already conscientious about your presence in wild habitats. While listening and recording are fairly noninvasive and harmless endeavors—much more passive than hiking, camping, rock climbing, or skiing—your presence will still have some impact on the landscape and the biophony. I’ll comment on other effects your presence may or may not have as I introduce the following activities.

The following activities offer possible adventures based on a number of my own rewarding field experiences. I encourage you to explore even further. But, again, be mindful of the effects you may have when you enter wildlife habitats.
